Second time around and still learning at USA TODAY

Elibuyuk,Berna at USAT-2By Dean’s Intern Berna Elibuyuk at USA TODAY

My previous post about my internship at USA TODAY had been a few months ago. Fast forward to the Spring 2016 semester and I am still at USA TODAY and loving it! This is my second internship period working as a Design Intern at USA TODAY and I couldn’t be happier. I had worked diligently on the assignments I was given, and by showing all of my hard work and efforts to both the design team and my supervisor, I was offered a chance to continue to intern at USA TODAY. I never expected to find myself working at such a distinguished, creative and innovative company, let alone spending another semester as a continuing intern. I can comfortably say that I have finally settled in.

Where the Cup Holders are Gold

Greene at InterfaceBy Dean’s Intern Chelsea Greene at Interface Media Group

My time at Interface has been wonderful! Everyone’s impressively creative and cool! There are so many Emmys lying around the office people are using them as cup holders. My job at Interface is to make portfolio videos, which is great because I get to work with everyone in the company putting together short videos about the work Interface has done with various clients. The highly skilled graphic designers, animators, and editors have no problem helping with any personal projects I may need help on as well. Some cool projects I’ve helped on so far are the control room for a live broadcast of a spaceship launch, animated logo designs for World Bank, and cinemagrams to advertise PBS’s original show, Mercy Street. I look forward to the rest of my time at Interface and I will be sad to leave if I must!

    Juggling it all at NPR

BLee at NPRy Dean’s Intern Jacquie Lee at NPR

I love to be busy, and the great thing about working on the nprEd team is that I can juggle lots of projects at once–in effect, be busy all the time. Right now I’m working on stories that cover a wide range of topics. From social media use in classrooms, to sex education, to the way children are learning across the globe, this internship has allowed me to expand my horizons when it comes to choosing topics to write about. Part of my morning routine is to look at as many news sources as I can to see what today’s top stories are. While it’s a struggle to stare at a screen before that first cup of coffee in the morning, it’s now grown to be a great way to start my day.   (More …)

Hitting the Ground Running at Discovery

    Bergmann, Charlotte at Discovery

By Dean’s Intern Charlotte Bergmann at Discovery Communications

Hi! My name is Charlotte Bergmann and I am a Corporate Communications Intern at Discovery Communications this semester. From when I started two weeks ago to now, I can assure you there has been no shortage of activity, excitement, and learning opportunities here in Silver Spring.

One of the coolest things I have been able to work on so far is helping with media outreach (drafting media advisories, compiling media lists) for TLC’s Say Yes to the Prom initiative. Now in its fifth year, this national program helps deserving high school students have the prom of their dreams without having to worry about the cost.

Not Your Ordinary Snow Day at NBC Washington

Barnes at NBCBy Dean’s Intern Sophia Barnes at NBC Washington

Snow days are big for local news, and Winter Storm Jonas/Blizzard 2016/Snowzilla (no one could agree on a name for this one) was especially big. Indeed, it was the fourth biggest storm in D.C. Through my Dean’s Internship at NBC Washington, I witnessed the whole thing from inside a constantly buzzing newsroom.

My classmates had no school and my already-graduated friends telecommuted. Our digital team leader, Wendy Warren, had told me how huge this would be for NBC Washington, though, so I put on my snow boots and trekked to work.

That day was one of the most fun ones of my internship so far. My intern coordinator, Carissa, and the other digital team members trust me to do a lot of projects at NBC Washington. Snowzilla was no different.

Riding the Wave of Changes at National Geographic

Burgess.Alicia at her deskBy Dean’s Intern Alicia Burgess at National Geographic

Last time I wrote on the Dean’s Intern blog, I was in the Ad Sales department at National Geographic. A lot has changed since then! During last semester, National Geographic entered a joint venture with Fox Entertainment group, now called Fox Partners. A lot of people were unfortunately laid off. I learned a lot from witnessing such a dynamic change not just in the company, but in the television industry. With everything that was happening at HR, they told me that the internship program there was going to be significantly limited in the spring. (More …)
