    Reflecting on My Time as a Digital Intern for NBC4

    When I started my internship at the digital desk for NBC4, I was really nervous. This was my first time writing for a hard news outlet; most of my previous experiences came from music journalism. So when I had my first goals meeting with one of my editors, I knew there were three things I had to do: have at least 50 bylines, write faster and shadow people in app development.
    Now that I’m nearing the end of my internship, I can confidently say I’m a faster writer; and give me a couple more weeks, and I can definitely hit 50 bylines. Not bad for someone who’s only there nine hours a week! I’ve learned to comfortably and accurately write two stories a shift.

    While my shifts were very short, I knew I had to take advantage of any opportunity to be involved outside of the digital team. I jumped at the chance to help out at a televised spelling bee and do social media for the USA Science and Engineering Festival. Doing social media at the festival was so much fun because not only did I get to learn about cool new things in STEM fields, I got to learn how to tweet or post on Instagram in a way that would engage viewers but also represent NBC4. It helped me learn that there are a lot of different sides to a news organization: community outreach and social media are just as crucial as web stories.

    To Science Channel … and Beyond!

    My internship at Discovery Communications always keeps me on my toes, and this semester has been no different. After spending the last nine months working with the communications team at Animal Planet, I shifted over to Science Channel’s communications team after some restructuring at Discovery.

    I’m always up for a new adventure, and this time, it took me to space! Ok, not really. But I do spend the vast majority of my time at Science Channel pulling and editing episode clips with Adobe Premiere Pro for NASA’s Unexplained Files and other Science Channel shows.

    Multimedia Storytelling at USA TODAY

    The past six weeks at USA TODAY have brought plenty of learning experiences along with some exciting opportunities for editing, reporting and writing. Since joining the editorial team in January, I have become accustomed to the fast-paced environment of a national newsroom and the team work that goes into printing a daily paper.

    At USA TODAY, I spend most of my time fact-checking contributed columns and adding multimedia elements to online stories. While these tasks can sometimes be painstaking, completing them every day has opened my eyes to the essential behind-the-scenes work that goes into each and every story. Multimedia production is another huge part of my job, and I am usually working on at least one such project each week. One of my favorite regular assignments is working on “Ask USA TODAY” videos, in which I recruit someone from the USA TODAY network to answer a reader-submitted question on camera. I am also responsible for editing and posting the film, which gives me a lot of creative freedom.

    Hello! My name is Shannon Lawrence and I am a video production intern in the Education and Outreach department at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

    Since starting my internship in January, I have had the pleasure of being a part of the production process of the Smithsonian webcast, Smithsonian Science How. I have helped film promotional segments for the webcast and have assisted in the live production of the monthly educational webcast. It is amazing how fast-paced a live production environment is!

    Rocking the First Amendment at the Newseum

    It’s a beautiful day to spend some time out on the Newseum’s terrace overlooking Pennsylvania Avenue.

    Exercise, defend and promote freedom. Uphold free expression by championing the five freedoms of the First Amendment: religion, speech, press, assembly and petition.

    It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it.

    During my final semester at AU, I have had the privilege of working as the exhibit development intern at the Newseum. I am guided by a highly-motivated team of writers, editors and researchers who are responsible for creating the scripts and written content that make up almost all of the museum’s exhibits.

    As you might expect, dedication to the core mission, partnered with a collaborative work environment, is constantly inspiring free-flowing conversation. Employees explore the challenges confronting modern day freedom by engaging in dialogue.

    Throughout my internship, I have regularly participated in meetings covering subjects such as religious freedom, the civil rights movement, and journalism ethics.

    Champion of the Five Freedoms

    Interning at the Newseum has been a phenomenal experience. As the production assistant intern I hit the ground running and got to work immediately. I have the opportunity to work with great people on some really exciting projects.

    I started off by working on promotional videos for various exhibits around the Newseum. One of my videos was displayed on YouTube while another has been playing on the giant atrium screen that all visitors see when they first enter the building.

    I’ve also had the chance to assist on multiple video shoots, including an interview with Senator John McCain and a video program with the Newseum’s Religious Freedom Center.

    The News Never Stops at NBC Washington

    It’s always an adventure at NBC Washington–especially this winter with the crazy weather! I think one of my greatest experiences so far has been covering the January blizzard. It was so exciting working with the Storm Team4 meteorologists and finding out the forecast before it was broadcasted to everyone on NBC4. I really got to see the importance of the news, especially during storms like this one. Since everyone was stuck inside, people turned on their TVs, browsed the site and opened the app to find the latest information on what was going on.

    I am thrilled to be the Production Assistant Intern at the Newseum this semester. My first month has been filled with a great deal of learning opportunities and wonderful experiences. My position offers me a variety of editing options and a behind the scenes glimpse into the professional world of video production, which I’m passionate about.

    I am so impressed with the people I work with and work for at the Newseum. There is always something exciting and newsworthy going. From day one, I’ve been encouraged to join in on the action. At the moment, I’m helping to uncover and collect new video content for some of the various upcoming exhibits. Currently my focus is on multiple Five Freedom videos for this year’s Museum Week that will help champion the five freedoms of the First Amendment.

    I was very fortunate to serve as The Durango Herald’s Capitol Hill reporting intern for the Fall 2015 semester, and even more fortunate to have my internship extended through Spring 2016.

    Over the past several months, I’ve explored a number of legislative issues of interest for the newspaper’s readers in southwestern Colorado. This has included a strong focus on national responses to the August 2015 Gold King Mine disaster, in which contractors working on the abandoned mine site for the Environmental Protection Agency accidentally unleashed more than 3 million gallons of toxic wastewater into the Animas River, which runs through Durango.

    The Power of Networking & Networking At Work

    Network, network, network. As a senior at AU, I’ve heard this word many times. To me, networking always sounded so stiff and insincere, which is why I never looked forward to doing it. But, over time and as I begin to apply for my first full time job, I now realize how important networking actually is.

    I am in my last semester of the agency rotational program at Discovery Communications and while my work this semester is very important, I find myself placing a bigger emphasis on networking within the Company than I ever have before. So far, I’ve gone on several coffee dates with people who hold different positions within the Company. My interests’ include marketing, publicity/PR and talent relations, and I’ve talked to several people in all of these fields across all networks. Grabbing a coffee and asking questions about what they do on a daily basis and how they got to where they are today has proved extremely beneficial, and I am very thankful to my manager for setting up these connections.
