Nothing But Fireworks at The Washington Post

DerekHawkinsCroppedBy Dean’s Intern Derek Hawkins at The Washington Post

It’s been nothing but fireworks since I started working on the metro desk at The Washington Post. Since late-winter, I’ve focused exclusively on cops and courts, reporting on some of the highest-profile cases in the region and the country.

Most recently, I spent two weeks in Baltimore covering the criminal trial of Caesar Goodson Jr., the police officer who faced the most serious charges in the death of Freddie Gray. Goodson drove the van in which Gray, a 25-year-old black man from West Baltimore, suffered a fatal neck injury in April 2012. He was the only officer charged with murder in Gray’s arrest and death, which sparked protests, demonstrations and later riots in the city.

    All In A Day’s Work at NBC4-Washington

    ESloanBlog2PixABy Dean’s Intern Ellana Sloan at NBC4-Washington

I came in Thursday morning to find out that we were shooting promotion commercials for NBC4 and Storm Team 4. Not only was the opportunity to witness an NBC-specific shoot with a full crew and talent beyond incredible, but also these specific spots will be aired during the opening night of the Olympics. Five minutes into talking with various people on the set (who, to my surprise, were thrilled to share their vast experience with me), I was asked to be in the first Storm Team promo. Although it was simply my backside that appeared on camera as I walked over to hand meteorologist Chuck Bell a piece of paper, it felt like such a big responsibility and honor. Later on, I got to be the person who “marked” each scene with the slat, and I swear it was my calling. Even though it was bit stressful since, as we all know, time is money, being able to slate each scene was stunning.

A Compelling Narrative at First Person

By Dean’s IBrown_Voxntern Elisha Brown at Vox and Scripps Howard Foundation Grantee

Wide-eyed and nervous, I started my first day at Vox about six weeks ago. Since then, I’ve learned so much about what goes into good journalism. As the First Person intern, I find compelling voices to write personal perspectives on the news, fact-check pieces, and work on long-term projects.

The best thing about working at the general interest website is that editors and writers really value your ideas and love to collaborate. I pitched a First Person piece that involved reaching out to a woman whose mother was killed in the Charleston shooting, and within weeks, we were able to share her story to our readers. On the collaboration front, if you don’t know a lot about a topic, there are countless genius writers with expertise on a beat who are right here and willing to help.

Working from Start to Finish at Al Jazeera English

By Dean’s Intern Nina Zafar at Al Jazeera English

Working at Al Jazeera is unlike any internship I’ve had before—in the best way!  I’ve been able to be a part of the documentary film-making process from start to finish (although we haven’t gotten to finish yet).  I’m working with a team of producers who are each working on their own documentary.  One is on the upcoming Republican National Convention and one is about the rise of Donald Trump.

    Forging New Experiences at Bloomberg/BNA

    NehaBhuraatBloombergBNA-2.6.27.2By Dean’s Intern Neha Bhura at Bloomberg/BNA

This internship makes me forget about all of the past experiences I’ve had, simply because it has been so rewarding. From orientation to 2 full days of HTML training to breakfast and luncheons with Executives to a scavenger hunt in Georgetown and volunteering to pack food for the food pantry in Arlington, I have enjoyed every moment of it.

    On the Move at Bloomberg/BNA

MaeveatBloombergBy Dean’s Intern Maeve Allsup at Bloomberg/BNA

For the first ten weeks of my internship at Bloomberg BNA, I’ve been assigned to the International Trade Desk, which is a perfect way for me to learn the ropes here while still getting to use a little bit of background from my SIS classes!  I’ve been assigned a few topics to follow in regards to trade, including ‘Brexit’, the presidential campaigns, relations with Cuba, and the Arctic.

So far I’ve written several full-length stories, several of which have focused on the Trans-Pacific Partnership. One of the best perks to working at a company under Bloomberg is that most people are willing to give me interviews or statements, despite the fact that I’m only an intern. I’ve attended and covered a few events in the last couple of weeks, both on the Hill and around Washington, which I really enjoy because it gives me the opportunity to meet other members of the press and to get out of the office!

Hitting the ground running at Current

AlyssaAndersonatCurrentBy Dean’s Intern Alyssa Anderson at Current

My internship at Current has been quite the learning experience so far! I am lucky to currently be a Current intern (ha puns!) because I am able to write articles every day and work with brilliant editors that have taken my writing to the next level. It is fun to see how a vague story idea at our morning meetings evolves into a full-length article in print.

One of the stories I chose to cover was about the fact that public radio stations have struggled to recruit for editor and news director positions. I spent over two weeks on this article conducting interviews and researching on the topic. By the time my editor published it on the site, I had my fill of that topic for a long time.

    The University of Discovery Communications

AlexandraFrancavillaatDiscoveryBy Dean’s Intern Alexandra Francavilla at Discovery Communications

“It’s like a University,” my boss keeps saying as she tours my fellow interns and I around – and she is right. The energy here in Silver Spring, MD feels much like a college campus. From the onsite doctor’s office to the cafeteria (full Starbucks menu included!)

What’s truly great is how much Discovery wants you to…well, discover. My boss always invites me to sit in on meetings, encourages me to offer ideas, and to ask peers to coffee so that I am constantly getting the most out of my time. Discovery also offers a speakers’ series. They have higher-ups throughout the company speak to interns about their careers. This allows us to gain a full understanding of how the company operates, as well as an incredible opportunity to network.

On the Go at Interface Media Group

Sound mix for PBS nature programming sizzle reel with Dennis Jacobsen, Emmy Award-winning Director of Audio for IMG

By Dean’s Intern Matt Cipollone at Interface Media Group and Scripps Howard Foundation Grantee

My experience so far at Interface Media Group has been great. During my first week, I sat in on edit sessions and sound mixes with Emmy Award-winning producers, editors, and sound designers, I helped build a set that was used for a live broadcast of a satellite launch, attended client meetings, shadowed the graphics team, and experienced my first virtual reality video session.

A Day in the Life at NBC

    EllanaSloanatNBC3A

By Dean’s Intern Ellana Sloan at NBC4-Washington

On June 12th, I walked over to NBC and into the Advertising and Promotion department, simply expecting to do some follow-up work on Camp 4 Kids, an NBC charity event to raise money for kids with disabilities, but instead, I was invited to assist an off-location shoot in Alexandria. I went along with Kaiser, the creative services producer at NBC, to shoot a spot for LivHOME in Arlington, an at-home senior care company. After loading the car with light kits, reflectors, a 4K camera, a plethora of lens, and a clipboard and script, we headed on our way to Virginia.  (More …)
