    Wagging Tails at Animal Planet

Sedwick, Hannah -- selfie at AnPlanetBy Dean’s Intern Hannah Sedgwick at Animal Planet

I’m thrilled and honored to be invited back to the Fall 2015 SOC Dean’s Intern cohort. I’m back for another round of interning with Animal Planet’s communications them and a third round of interning at Discovery Communications in Silver Spring, MD.

Like I’ve said in my previous posts, interning at Discovery has been such an incredible experience. Working at Animal Planet has given me an even better view of the PR world. Since June, I’ve been working primarily on local pitches for shows like “Finding Bigfoot,” “Dr. Jeff: Rocky Mountain Vet” and “Rugged Justice” as well as a few upcoming shows. When I walk into my apartment, my roommates are almost always watching Animal Planet and I take a lot of pride in the fact that I can give a plot synopsis for the episode and recite it verbatim. Press Releases & Even More Puppies at Animal Planet

By Dean’s Intern Hannah Sedgwick at Animal Planet

My internship with the communications team at Animal Planet has absolutely exceeded my expectations. And yes, the puppies might have something to do with it.

I spend the bulk of my time typing away at press releases, media lists, pitches and episode descriptions for upcoming Animal Planet shows. It’s been such an incredible experience to see what happens behind the scenes at one of the coolest networks around. I’ve had  real, substantial experiences that with undoubtedly be a huge help when I start my MA in Strategic Communication on August 31st. Like I said in my previous post, I don’t really have a background in PR but it’s a career path I would love to pursue in the future. Having these on-the-job experiences in advance of starting my formal schooling on the subject will be invaluable. (More …)

Press Releases & Puppies at Animal Planet

By Dean’s Intern Hannah Sedgwick at Discovery Communications

My cube is surrounded by a Bigfoot plush that roars, a common area called “The Tank,” a constantly rotating candy selection and giant cut outs of Animal Planet celebri-cat, Lil BUB. Where can an intern find such an eclectic assortment of objects? Animal Planet, of course.

The coolest place on the planet…as far as I’m concerned.

I sort of fell into this path of working in PR. I just finished my BA in Communication Studies and will start my one-year MA in Strategic Communication at AU as part of SOC’s BA/MA program. Last summer, I interned with Discovery Education and consumer products as their public relations intern. I had no clue about the world of PR when I sat down at my desk last summer and now I feel like a (semi) pro sitting at my desk typing away pitches, media advisories, media lists and press releases. I’m not a traditional public relations student in the sense that I’ve learned everything I know about PR on the job at the world’s largest paid TV programmer. (More …)

Tales from the Newseum Broadcast Department: Part 4, John Lewis Documentary Shoot

By Dean’s Intern Hannah Sedgwick at the Newseum

Congressman Lewis and me, arguably the happiest person on the planet at this very moment.

Just when I thought my internship at the Newseum’s Broadcast Department was over, it started right back up again.

My official last day was this past Tuesday and I was really sad to leave all of the amazing people I got to know so well.

The next day, I was invited to be a Production Assistant for a filming at a local school with Congressman John Lewis. In one of my previous posts back in March, I wrote about doing the back research for a documentary on Lewis. I love learning about the Civil Rights Era and generally anything that has to do with the 1960s. I took a course my sophomore year called “How the News Media Shaped History” where I learned a lot about the power of the press in the movement. I was hooked.

Tales from the Newseum’s Broadcast Department: Part 3, Ford’s Theatre TV Shoot

By Dean’s Intern Hannah Sedgwick at the Newseum

By far, the cherry on top of the ice cream that is my Newseum Broadcast internship was having the opportunity to be a Production Assistant/Runner for a real, live, legitimate TV filming for the pilot of a TV series that will hopefully get picked up by Travel Channel. We filmed a piece at Ford’s Theatre about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln that I’ve been researching during my time at the Newseum.

I’m still in shock that I was on set for a TV filming. As I mentioned in my previous post, I’ve always been more excited and interested in what happens behind the scenes. My favorite part of DVDs is the bonus feature reel where they show all the technical equipment, hair/makeup, slate and directors. The entire experience was quite surreal.

Tales from the Newseum’s Broadcast Department: Part 2, Ford’s Theatre Location Scout

Dean’s Intern Hannah Sedgwick at the Newseum

My internship at the Newseum’s broadcast department has been filled with new experiences. I have to pinch myself constantly to remind myself that this is real life. Just a few months ago I thought, “Wow, wouldn’t it be great to work at the Newseum?” and now it’s reality.

Here's me at the Newseum from the viewing area on the 6th. Talk about a view.

By far, the coolest experience I’ve had so far has been going on a location scout with all of the producers, editors and designer in the broadcast department. We went on a “field trip” just a few blocks to Ford’s Theatre, the theater on 10th Street where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865, which will be a filming location for an upcoming TV series. I’ll hopefully get to help out during the shooting day if all goes as planned. (More …)

Tales from the Newseum’s Broadcast Department

I can't get enough of this view. Or my official looking ID.

I can’t get enough of this view. Or my official looking ID.

I’ve been to my internship as a Research Associate in the Newseum’s broadcast department four times now and I still need to pinch myself every time I walk through the doors.

Since coming to DC, the Newseum has been my favorite District museum. The first time I visited the 250,000 sq.ft. facility with 7 floors of news exhibits I spent five and a half hours there. Just a disclaimer: I may be the biggest communication nerd on the planet. Anything involving the media, news, social media or technology makes my heart sing. Add in the history aspect that the Newseum prides itself on, and I’m swooning. The office (More …)
