    My Journey into Public Media

Hogan, Samantha at CurrentABy Dean’s Intern Samantha Hogan at Current.org

Scandal? Innovation? Hillary Clinton?  — That’s just the surface of my semester internship at Current.org, a publication that follows public radio, tv and its people, while also a master student in investigative journalism and public affairs.

“Public media” has proven to be a treasure trove of stories, despite the fact that I could barely define it before joining Current.

On day one, I was interviewing the Online News Association’s newest fellow, who was an up-and-coming producer at WNYC, and starting to delve into the nuances of the NPR One app.

    Dreams Come True At NPR

By Dean’s Intern Ryan Schuette at NPR

Schuette, Ryan at NPRShortly before applying to American University, I decided I wanted one professional experience: to work in some capacity with National Public Radio. I’ve been a listener for years and have in the past also been a donor. I applied once before, in the spring, and didn’t receive it. Upon graduating in August, I applied again but booked a flight to the Caribbean with a friend, thinking it probably wouldn’t happen.

And then it did. I’ve been a reporting intern with NPR’s education desk since early October, and the experience has been extraordinary.

Political Reporting for The Durango Herald

By Dean’s Intern Edward Graham at The Durango Herald

I found out about The Durango Herald’s Capitol Hill internship through one of my professors, and I immediately jumped at the opportunity. I’ve always enjoyed following national politics and writing about public policy, but I never experienced the on-the-ground realities of being a real political reporter until I started with the paper.

Learning the ropes at National Geographic

Litman, Eugene at NatGeoBy Dean’s Intern Eugene Litman at National Geographic

Hi! My name is Eugene Litman and I’m a senior double majoring in Business Administration & Film and Media Arts with a marketing specialization. I grew up in the D.C. suburbs and my mom is actually a career counselor at AU. That being said, I definitely know the importance of internships during college, and I’m very excited to now be a Dean’s intern.

After spending a semester interning in the marketing department for Discovery, I decided to check out its competition.

Soaring to new heights at Discovery

Ferreira, Carly DiscoveryWorkShotBy Dean’s Intern Carly Ferreira at Discovery Communications

My Time on the Media Strategy and Analytics Team (Rotation #2)

I truly have learned so much in so little time. On September 8th, I walked into the doors of the huge Discovery Communications building, ready and excited to embrace my next adventure. I was excited to be back here but knew it would be a different experience. During the summer, I was on the insights and research team and absolutely loved my time there, working on consumer insights and research. My new team, however, was much bigger. The media strategy and analytics team was now 35-40 people and I was the only intern. I also knew absolutely nothing about media strategy and analytics, but I remained open minded and eager to learn, which soon paid off.

From NBC Field Trip to Internship

Pariser, Maddi at NBC4By Dean’s Intern Maddi Pariser at NBC4

Last semester, during the Spring of 2015, I was enrolled in Professor Lynne Perri’s reporting class. She arranged for us to take a tour of the NBC4 Washington studio on Nebraska Avenue during one of our class periods. Our tour was lead by Matt Glassman, who is both an AU professor and the assistant news director at the station.

Excellent and unique opportunities like this often arise when studying in the School of Communications at AU. In fact, last week Professor Jane Hall took my advanced reporting class to the NPR headquarters so we could spend time learning about the history of public radio. Site trips like these are part of the many privileges that come along with being a journalism student in the District.

Tips on Landing a Great Internship

    Burgess, Alicia at National Geographic

By Dean’s Intern Alicia Burgess at National Geographic

I would highly recommend pursuing a Dean’s Internship. If you’re serious about pursuing a career in media, this will really propel you and put your foot in the door of respected organizations.  I never knew how much of a supportive community Dean’s Internships had before I started, but my supervisor at NatGeo is an AU alum and started there as an intern too.

That being said, most internships, and especially Dean’s Internships, don’t just fall in your lap, so if you want some hints, read on!

Interface Media Group Does it All!

Zahar, Nick IMGAtWorkBy Dean’s Intern Nick Zachar at Interface Media Group

Where do I start? I have been fortunate enough to have not only one, but two Dean’s Internships as a graduate student at AU’s School of Communication. Not only that, but internships with two amazing organizations. Three weeks into my fall internship at Interface Media Group I have had a wide array of experiences — from working on various projects in the studio to beginning development of a case study (short video) about a project that IMG did with one of their clients. One thing I have learned quickly is that IMG DOES IT ALL. I was, and still am, amazed by the amount and variety of projects going on throughout the company.

    Wagging Tails at Animal Planet

Sedwick, Hannah -- selfie at AnPlanetBy Dean’s Intern Hannah Sedgwick at Animal Planet

I’m thrilled and honored to be invited back to the Fall 2015 SOC Dean’s Intern cohort. I’m back for another round of interning with Animal Planet’s communications them and a third round of interning at Discovery Communications in Silver Spring, MD.

Like I’ve said in my previous posts, interning at Discovery has been such an incredible experience. Working at Animal Planet has given me an even better view of the PR world. Since June, I’ve been working primarily on local pitches for shows like “Finding Bigfoot,” “Dr. Jeff: Rocky Mountain Vet” and “Rugged Justice” as well as a few upcoming shows. When I walk into my apartment, my roommates are almost always watching Animal Planet and I take a lot of pride in the fact that I can give a plot synopsis for the episode and recite it verbatim.
